degree project: researchable questions... and dreams!

Amy and I talked about our degree projects yesterday and worked on formulating questions for each other. Here's what Amy came up with for my project:

"How can a design system help the interaction and conversation between middle school students of different cultures in furthering their education?"

After talking over it a little bit more, here's what we worked on together to help specify a bit more. I'm not quite sure if the "design system" term is correct yet, so if anyone has a better suggestion on that I'd love to hear it. Amy and I were thinking along the lines of the "systems" we made last year in MX, if that makes any sense?

"How can a design system aid interaction between middle school students of different cultures in learning about one another and preventing prejudices early in life?"

We've also been asked to start setting some goals or dreaming about the future in a couple of classes: a lot of the time I can't even decide where I want to be tomorrow, so it's a pretty tough thing to do. I know that of course, I want to wake up and be happy for what I'm privileged enough to do everyday. My biggest fear is being in a situation where work turns me into a robot. I like robots and all, but they're kinda best left to video games and action movies. I never want my work to be boring or stagnant. That being said, I'm interested and excited about interactive design and would absolutely love to focus on that, but I wouldn't limit myself to that either. I'd be happy in a cozy studio where I can work on interactive projects, but also dabble in some other stuff as well. I don't think that I'm the kind of person who can do the same thing over and over for a long time, and I think that's one of the reasons I chose design: the possibilities are endless. I'd also love to work with a close group of people who are versatile in their interests and strength, so we can all play off of each other well. I think a group of people with diverse interests will teach each other a lot, and I always want to be learning something new.

Actual workplace aside, another thing I'd really love to do (which may or may not be career related) is travel. I think it might be scary to work in a completely foreign place, but it'd certainly be an exciting learning experience. If not, work might just be something that helps to fund my dream to hop around the world and see some places I've wanted for a long time. I'd also love to move back to the west coast and see the ocean again!

All that aside, last night I had a dream I was stuck in Disneyland. Subconsciously I must not want to grow up!

Traditionally a "design system" might refer to something like an identity and collateral. But, as you have been learning, the term is much more expansive and addresses scope and complexity at a systems level by designing flexible frameworks.

You should look into design firms that have offices in many locations, national and international, because you could put in for a transfer to try out a new place.

P.S. since your area is interactive I really recommend you look at VML. If you're interested let me know.
