Icon Development: Color Exploration

During the course of last week I tried quite a few different color arrangements from the palettes posted below. For my icons, it's important that the line work still be the main emphasis of the image. I decided to go with three color, so the icons that were working best were the ones with dark lines, secondary shadows and a light background.

After knocking some of the ideas out (the first set being too neutral, the second set's blue being too glowy, and the fourth not really working that well at all) I decided to proceed with the third set. From here it's a matter of playing with the colors and making sure the white accents on all of the icons are distributed equally.

I changed the original palette on the left to look less fleshy and more yellow. Also lightened up the blue so it's not looking too black. I've still been playing around with the values a bit, so I guess I still haven't decided yet.

The color application really helps the legibility of your set at the small scale.

The mid-tone maybe too dark.
