Visual Language: 15 pencil sketches

Sketches for today, hopefully they're all clickable.

For my first set I took from my metaphorical/ironic matrix sections, focusing on children's items/activities and how they relate to some of the important issues researched (namely the economy, and how many worry it will effect the future generations).

Copy: don't vote - shape the future/shape the future - don't vote

Second: luchadores. I had a hard time trying to relate it to issues -- so I guess it's more humorous than anything, mostly related through cultural reference and the metaphor of an election being like a wrestling match. Silly.

Copy: mano a mano! - november 11, 2008 (eh, hoping to find something related to lucha libre that could work)

Third: Play off the value of and importance of caring for one's family, and looking at the entire country as family. Using the two ideas of places in the home where you hang your hats or coats, or "weaving" the country together like a poncho or sarape.

Copy: Something simple like "family", "familia", or the popular "mi casa es su casa".

Last: Playing with the similarities between voting/ballots and the game Loteria (similar to bingo, except with illustrations that include the spanish word underneath, rather than numbers and letters). A couple variations on this, one of which I thought about making illustrations of the various issues for each square. Some classmates noted that it may be too visually complex for a poster to have so much going on, though.

Copy: don't leave it up to chance?

Need to work on the cheesy text.

many of your ideas show an awesome cultural sensitivity that i love, so i hope you can hold on to that in your refinements.

children's objects
seems like your copy would work best with the piggy bank because the financial message is clear. if you use the piñata, the copy may have to say something about the economy to make the metaphor evident. i do like the irony of a single piece of candy coming out though. that's pretty powerful if you can make that little piece seem really lonely and pitiful.

luchadores
the v-o-t-e on the mouths is trying too hard for a pun. the D and R on the foreheads works much better. your drawing with the two masks is nice, and the metaphor works very well. however i believe several of your classmates are exploring similar options as well.

family
i'm a little worried about the sombrero and serape/poncho because those are so stereotypical and from the past, but maybe they talk about heritage. i just don't want them to be viewed in a negative light. i do think the woven maps are an interesting idea because it's a more open-ended reference. the other issue here is how to tie "familia" or "mi casa es su casa" back to voting. seems like it may take a little more effort to do that.

loteria
i think this idea is actually quite strong and could be made to work well. is there a way to simplify at all? can you take liberties with the game board or maybe just show a crop of it? i'm not sure the simplicity is even an issue really. putting the issues in the slots is a good idea. is there a way to work the word "vota" into the board to bring it back around to the main message?
