Designer Bio:
Michael Bierut studied graphic design at the University of Cincinnati's College of Design, Art and Planning before landing his first job working at Vignelli Associates in 1980. Since then, he has moved on to working as a partner at Pentagram. Bierut has led a team of graphic designers in identity, environmental and editorial design solutions since 1990.
He is well known for his work with Saks Fifth Avenue, a packaging project that entertained the idea of consistency within variation. Recently, he has done identity and packaging work with Strathmore Paper, and historic restaurant "The Oak Room" at the Plaza Hotel. His experience in identity and environmental design have no doubt aided in his work within the field of packaging, where Bierut explores drama and scale while managing to stay true to the identity of the company.
Over his many years of experience in the design field, he has won hundreds of awards and contributed to the profession not only in his design work-- but through leadership and writing. Bierut is a Senior Critic in Graphic Design at the Yale School of Art, and worked as president of AIGA National from 1998 to 2001. In 2006, he received the AIGA Medal in recognition of his accomplishments in the field. He has written various books, is a co-founder of the weblog Design Observer, and has been heard nationally on the Public Radio program "Studio 360", as well as in the documentary "Helvetica."
